Assessing Monitored Natural Recovery (MNR) for remediating crude oil spills in freshwater environments: The Freshwater Oil Spill Remediation Study (FOReSt) at the Experimental Lakes Area, Canada

چکیده
ABSTRACT (#667537) Monitored natural recovery (MNR) was assessed as a non-invasive method for limiting residual oil exposure in the aquatic environment following contained spills of Cold Lake Blend diluted bitumen (CLB) and conventional heavy crude (CHV) at IISD-Experimental Lakes Area Canada. Oils were applied left place 72h to simulate potential spill cleanup response times. After physical removal free surface oil, biological (microbes, zooplankton communities, emergent insects, benthic invertebrate) over 80d polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) their alkylated forms (aPACS) water sediment characterized. Embryonic development fathead minnow eggs exposed from each enclosures used determine impacts on fish early life stage development. There significantly different concentrations PACs treated with CHV immediately after application attenuation differed between two products throughout study period. Water primarily 3 ring aPACs. Microbial taxa known degrading capacity increased relative total community abundance. Emergent insect abundance lower both reference enclosures, but not impacted by treatments. could be successfully affected freshwater shorelines, additional data are required long term trajectories.

Oil Spill in Lac-Mégantic, Canada: EnvironmentalMonitoring and Remediation
In North America, investment in unconventional oil extraction has increased due to the scarcity of conventional reserves. The rapid production growth has induced an extensive transportation activity, sometimes using aging pipelines and inadequate rail tank cars. Without surprise, in recent years, several high impact oil spills have occurred, as the taken place in Lac-Mégantic, the worst terrest...

Separation of oil and water in oil spill recovery operations *
The separation of water from oil that is collected in any oil spill recovery operation is a continuing and necessary requirement during every stage of the effort. Its importance is reflected in the cost of transport and storage of large volumes of oily water, the salvage value of separated oil and the added labor costs associated with long-term recovery operations. This paper addresses the effe...
متن کاملContainment & Recovery of Oil Spills at Sea . Methods and Limitations .
The ultimate aim of any oil recovery operation at sea is to collect as much floating oil as is reasonably and economically possible. However, a review of past spills shows that rarely is more than 10% of spilled oil recovered from the sea surface. Although many methods of mechanical containment and recovery exist, each has its own limitations which affect the overall success of a recovery opera...
